Deep Dental Cleaning

When plaque and bacteria has accumulated below your gumline, a standard teeth cleaning may not be enough to remove it. A deep dental cleaning performed by our skilled dental hygienists can eliminate this harmful bacteria and restore the health of your gums. If you have been diagnosed with needing a deep dental cleaning by our experienced dentist, Dr. Tran, it is important to get treatment as soon as possible. Untreated plaque buildup below the gumline can lead to severe gum disease and bone and tooth loss.

What Is A Deep Cleaning?

A deep dental cleaning, also known as a periodontal scaling and root planing, is a procedure that focuses on cleaning below the gumline of your teeth. During a standard teeth cleaning, a dental hygienist cleans the surface of and in between your teeth. However, in a deep dental cleaning procedure, our skilled dental hygienist will go below your gumline to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth and smooth the outer surface of your tooth roots. Smoothing the rough spots on the tooth roots will prevent the collection of further bacteria.

A deep teeth cleaning is usually performed in one or more visits to our office, depending on your comfort level and the amount of bacteria present. Our dentist may recommend numbing and sedation options in order to keep you comfortable throughout the deep cleaning process.

How Do I Know If I Need A Deep Teeth Cleaning?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, we urge you to come in for a consultation with our dentist. Dr. Tran will thoroughly evaluate the health of your teeth and gums and determine if a deep cleaning is right for you. He will also create a comprehensive treatment plan to address your gum disease.

Some of the symptoms that you may need a deep dental cleaning include:

  • Red and swollen gums
  • Bleeding when you brush and floss your teeth
  • Tender gums
  • Receding gums

What Is The Deep Cleaning Process?

When you first visit our dentist office in Tampa, we will perform a complete examination of your mouth and take any necessary x-rays. This will allow our experienced dentist, Dr. Tran, to get a comprehensive understanding of your oral health and develop a treatment plan based on your unique needs. If there is a large buildup of plaque and bacteria accumulated under your gumline, Dr. Tran may recommend a deep dental cleaning.

To start you deep teeth cleaning, we will gently numb the cleaning area and safely administer any necessary sedation. We will then work to precisely remove plaque and bacteria from the roots of your teeth. We will also smooth out the surface of the roots to prevent further bacteria from collecting.

After your deep teeth cleaning, you may experience soreness, tooth sensitivity or light bleeding when brushing and flossing, but this should dissipate within a few days. Our doctor may recommend that you receive a deep dental cleaning every 3 or 6 months, depending on the severity of your infection and your individualized treatment plan.
