What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement solution that fits an artificial tooth root directly into your jawbone. A standard dental implant resembles a screw and is made of strong titanium. An attachment is placed on top of the implant to secure a single prosthetic tooth (like a dental crown) or a bridge of prosthetic teeth, restoring the natural look of your smile.

Dental implants can support and retain crowns, bridges, partial dentures, and complete dentures. Some implant dentures snap on and off of implant attachments and are removable by the patient for cleaning and sleeping. Implant retained crowns, bridges, and hybrid dentures are fixed on implants so they stay permanently in place. With proper dental care, dental implants should last the duration of your lifetime.

The Many Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are considered the gold standard of care for the replacement of missing teeth. This is because dental implants provide exceptional benefits when compared with traditional crown and bridge treatment and removable dentures including:

  • Easier, more comfortable eating, talking, and smiling
  • A more attractive, natural looking smile with artificial teeth
  • Improved jawbone health and the prevention of bone deterioration
  • Better durability than traditional restorations
  • Resistant to tooth decay and infection
  • No need to crown adjacent healthy teeth to hold a bridge or to modify adjacent teeth with removable bridge attachments
  • No need to use messy adhesives (denture creams) to hold a denture in place
  • Easy to care for with normal brushing and flossing

Dental implants also provide many quality-of-life benefits including improved oral health, the ability to enjoy all of your favorite foods, better nutrition (therefore improved systemic health), increased social confidence, and lowered risk of needing retreatment years down the road.

Dental Implants At Mangrove Bay Dentistry

With the exception of "mini implants," which Dr. Tran places himself, Dr. Tran works in an interdisciplinary way with specialists who are experts in dental implant placement and the related surgical procedures you might need to develop bone tissue prior to implant placement and restoration. Working in collaboration with implant surgeons, who place thousands of implants a year, ensures optimal evaluation for implants, site preparation, and placement. Dr. Tran and one of his preferred specialists will plan your treatment together, communicate fully, and educate you about your recommended treatment. They will also answer questions you may have and help you make decisions regarding what options are best for you.

Once dental implants are fully integrated with your jawbone through the process of osseointegration, and your surgical specialist has cleared you for implant restoration, Dr. Tran will then complete your treatment. Dr. Tran will place your custom implant attachment and prostheses which may be an implant crown, multi-unit bridge, or denture. He will make sure the fit, function, comfort, and aesthetics are ideal. He will also provide you with instructions for caring for your mouth and perform follow-up evaluations to make sure everything is going well.

The Dental Implant Process

When a standard dental implant is placed for a single prosthetic tooth or bridge, you are usually sedated. An experienced dentist will open the gum tissue, place the implant screw in your jawbone and then close the gum tissue. There is generally minimal post-operative pain in the bone itself. Post-operative swelling and pain in the gum tissue is minimal and easily controlled. For about the next three to four months, bone tissue will grow firmly around the dental implant until it is fixed in the jaw (osseointegration). After this process of osseointegration, your gum tissue will be topically numbed and injected with a local anesthetic. The gum tissue will be opened, and an implant abutment will be attached to the implant. A healing end cap may be placed on the abutment to allow gum tissue to heal in a natural contour that will frame your prosthetic tooth. When your gum tissue has healed, Dr. Tran will place your custom crown or bridge on the implant abutment. Your new implant will provide you with strong stability when you bite or chew and a natural-looking appearance.

Some patients may require a bone graft, sinus lift, or other enhancement procedure prior to implant placement, in order to provide sufficient bone support for implant success or to ensure optimal aesthetic results. In these cases, we will work with an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon who performs hundreds of these procedures each year. If you are in need of bone and/or soft tissue enhancement, the process of your entire implant treatment may be extended by about two months to allow for full healing and bone strength.
